Diaphragm Valves
Alfa Laval diaphragm valves serve as aseptic inline solutions for shutting off, diverting, and regulating fluid flow in hygienic, high-purity, and aseptic processing lines. Operating either manually or pneumatically, these valves are designed to be compact and lightweight, making them easily configurable to meet various process demands. They are particularly well-suited for sterile and ultra-hygienic applications in the biotech and pharmaceutical industries.

Design purpose-built two-way or multiport diaphragm valves to meet your exact requirements. Selection is simple, flexible and easy. All high-grade, ATEX-compliant components are compatible and engineered to safeguard product quality and process efficiency, reliability and economy.
Choose from hard and soft membranes, various valve bodies, pneumatic actuator or manual handle, diaphragm materials, connections and also various surface finishes and materials, including corrosion-resistant alloys. Then add the valve sensing and control units to suit your exact process requirements.
How does a diaphragm valve work?
Alfa Laval diaphragm valves have two modes of operation: manual operation using a handle and automatic operation using a pneumatic actuator.
For manual operation, simply turn the handle to lift the compressor upwards. This moves the diaphragm away from the weir of the valve body, thereby opening the valve. Turning the handle in the opposite direction pushes the compressor downwards onto the diaphragm, pressing the diaphragm against the weir of the valve body and closing the valve.
For automatic operation, a pneumatic actuator controls the axial movement of a piston, thereby opening or closing the valve, depending on the actuator function.
Alfa Laval Unique DV-ST UltraPure
Alfa Laval Unique DV-ST UltraPure diaphragm valves are the natural choice for pharma and biotech industries as well as other hygiene-focused processes. The compact and lightweight valves comprise a series of base parts, including valve bodies, diaphragms, actuators and handles. The choice gives you many configurations to meet your processes’ exact needs.
Key benefits
- High-quality valve bodies, proven diaphragms, reliable actuators
- Compact, lightweight, hygienic design – high-grade valve bodies and low Ra surface finishes
- Reduced risk of contamination – fully documented, made for aseptic operations with a standard low-ferrite valve body (optional high alloy valve body)
- Reliable, long-life diaphragm – available in high-performance EPDM for continuous steam operation at temperatures up to 150°C
- Flexible, fits-all stainless steel actuators available in slim and high-pressure versions, backed by a five-year warranty
- Easy installation, validation and qualification backed by Alfa Laval Q-doc comprehensive documentation package and service partner network
The Unique DV-ST UltraPure diaphragm valve is available for pneumatic or manual operation. For pneumatic operation, the valves are controlled by actuators that operate at product pressures of up to 10 bar, depending on the valve size, diaphragm material (EPDM, PTFE/EPDM and TFM/PTFE) and actuator selected.
For manual operation, the diaphragm valves are controlled by turning a handle attached to the stem. The handle features standard over-closure protection to help prolong diaphragm life. All steel parts are made of stainless steel or composite material, depending on the handle type.
Actuators for tight spaces and high pressure
Unique DV-ST UltraPure Slim (SS/SL)
- Handles normal product pressures up to 10 bar
- Slim and compact for tight spaces and optimal drain angles
- Optional stroke limiter for flow control
Unique DV-ST UltraPure High Pressure (SS/HP)
- Handles high product pressures up to 10 bar (Δ=0%)
- Robust design for demanding systems
- Available in NC, NO, A/A, and ATEX versions
Unique DV-ST UltraPure valve technology
Premium as standard, the Unique DV-ST has valve bodies with low delta-ferrite content and defined sulphur content in all forged and block valves. Two-way valves are forged from a single block. T- and tank-outlet valves are machined from a single block. Hygienic diaphragm valves are available in multiple configurations and materials.
All diaphragms are FDA/USP classified, TSE/ADI-compliant, with cure dates and traceability. Compatible sensing and control devices include control units, position indicators, stroke limiters and valve positioners.
Service and reliability
The diaphragm valves come with Alfa Laval Q-doc, a comprehensive documentation package that ensures full transparency of the supply chain. Q-doc facilitates qualification, validation and change control procedures, supporting seamless implementation and regulatory compliance in pharmaceutical and biotech applications.
How does the Unique DV-ST UltraPure work?
The standard Unique DV-ST UltraPure consists of a valve body, diaphragm, and handle or actuator. Turning the handle pushes the compressor against the diaphragm to seal the valve, while pneumatic versions use a stainless-steel actuator to control the piston’s axial movement.
Both Slim and High Pressure actuator types are available in normally closed (NC), normally open (NO), air/air (A/A), and ATEX-certified versions for explosive environments.
