How Do Regulating Valves Work?

Constant Pressure Valve Range
Alfa Laval offers three types of CPM valves. Modular design enables the use of different plug sizes and flow rates from 0.5 to 110 m³/h, providing great operational flexibility. Some CPM valves can also be ATEX-approved for use in potentially explosive areas.
Compliance and Aseptic Version
CPM valves meet most hygienic standards required by the food and personal care industries. The aseptic version includes a diaphragm that reacts under aseptic conditions to pressure changes, making it ideal for aseptic filling and bottling lines.
How it works
Construction: The CPMI-2 and CPMO-2 consist of a welded valve body and seat, plug, cover, and a special diaphragm. The CPM-I-D60 includes additional piping.
Operating Principle: The valve is remotely controlled by compressed air. A diaphragm reacts immediately to product pressure changes, shifting to maintain constant pressure. Inlet models open with increasing product pressure; outlet models close with increasing pressure.

How it works
Construction: Made of AISI 316L stainless steel with EPDM seals, fittings for nylon hoses, and a CIP cleaning nozzle. An optional pneumatic nozzle can replace the closing plug. Fully compatible with SCANDI BREW® systems.
Operating Principle: The set point pressure is applied to the top of the membrane. When tank pressure exceeds this set point, the valve opens to release pressure through the vent. Force-opening via air signal allows CIP cleaning through the nozzle or CIP supply valve.

Alfa Laval SB Tank Pressure Regulator
The Alfa Laval SB Tank Pressure Regulator maintains the working pressure in the vapour space, or at the top, of a process tank during filling, processing and emptying. It generally connects directly to the gas pipe or Cleaning-in-Place (CIP) pipe that leads in to the tank top, or is incorporated into a flow panel. This ensures process safety and effectiveness as well as safeguards product integrity.

How it works
Construction
The tank pressure regulator consists of single valve unit incorporating a pressure exhaust valve, a pressure-supply valve and a connection for a pressure gauge. The pressure regulator can be supplied with a valve with different versions of the spring/regulating unit:
- Fixed setting (only one pressure)
- Variable setting
- Pneumatic actuator
The regulator can be integrated with a SCANDI BREW® tank top system.
Operating principle
The valve unit is supplied with either with a fixed setting or a variable setting, which adjusts the relieving pressure to the required working pressure in the tank. When tank top pressure exceeds the preset pressure, the regulator releases the gas through the vent port either for atmospheric discharge or for collection. If the tank top pressure decreases, gas is supplied through the gas supply connection at the bottom.
Cleaning-in-place (CIP)
The tank pressure regulator requires cleaning between every batch. It is incorporated into the tank CIP procedure by means of the optional CIP adaptor. Before cleaning, the CIP adaptor is mounted onto the pressure regulator; it forces open the gas supply valve and pressure relief valve and enables them to be fully cleaned. During the CIP procedure, all functions are blocked. See the schematic drawing of the regulator.

The Unique RV-P Regulating Valve is designed for precise flow control in the dairy, food, beverage, biotechnology, pharmaceutical and many other industries.
Extremely accurate valve flow regulation
Alfa Laval offers two regulating valves: Unique RV-P and an aseptic version, Unique RV-P Aseptic. These normally open or normally closed regulating valves provide highly accurate control of pressure, flow, temperature and fluid levels in tanks and in steel pipe systems.
Advanced hygienic valve design
Unique RV-P valves are ideal for high-volume sanitary process applications that require precision control. With a self-draining valve body, these valves are authorized to carry the 3-A symbol. Especially suitable for aseptic applications that require SIP (Sterilization in Place), the Unique RV-P valves are fitted with PTFE diaphragms that prevent contamination from microorganisms and particles outside the product zone.
Extreme valve accuracy
The Unique RV-P features an electro-pneumatic actuator with integrated IP converter and integrated positioner, which contribute to greater operational accuracy and reliability. The positioner for Unique RV-P valves are IP66 certified for water and dust protection.
Regulating valves with Unique SSV modularity
The pneumatic actuated regulation valves from Alfa Laval are both built on the same Unique SSV platform and thus modular with the Alfa Laval single seat valve range. The Unique RV-ST is ideal for standard regulating duties like metering, blending, weighing and filling.
If the regulating demands increases then the Unique RV-P is the optimal choice. With a high precision actuator and positioner it is ideal for regulation in applications where the highest accuracy is required. Based on modular components different plug configurations can be selected to meet specific Kv requirements. The lower sealing element is clamped on and can be replaced to match flexible Kv values.
Aseptic version
The aseptic version of Alfa Laval's Unique RV-P is called Unique RV-P Aseptic. This is an electro-pneumatic modulating valve that features an IP converter as an integrated part of the actuator. Available with a range of plug designs with different Kv values, providing different capacities.
Supplied with an aseptic diaphragm that provides hermetic sealing against intrusion from the atmosphere, ensuring full protection against the effects of micro-organisms during processing. This design allows aseptic control of pressure, flow, temperature in aseptic systems and to control the level of liquids in aseptic tanks.
Like all Alfa Laval valves, the Unique RV-P Aseptic is constructed with few moving parts housed in the actuator for added wear protection. Its compact hygienic design reduces the need for maintenance and makes disassembly, if required, quick and easy. Plus, there are no loose springs to pose any safety risk when opening the valve. The diaphragm is fully modular with the well-proven diaphragms from the Unique SSV Aseptic portfolio.

How it works
Construction: The Unique RV-P valve consists of a valve body without seal, cone-shaped regulating plug, lip seal, bonnet and an actuator. The actuator with the bonnet is fitted to the valve body by means of a clamp ring. The standard valve is supplied with a standard normally open (NO) actuator. Upon request, it may also be supplied with a normally closed (NC) actuator.
Operating Principle: Alfa Laval Unique RV-P valves feature an electro-pneumatic actuator with an integrated IP converter, which provides accurate and reliable conversion of electrical signals from a controller directly to pneumatic signals. With the contactless magnetic sensor technology, the actuator and positioner are insensitive to vibrations and pressure shocks. The pneumatic signals are relayed to an integrated positioner, which operates by means of the force balance principle. This ensures that the position of the actuator piston is directly proportional to the input signal. Signal range and zero point can be adjusted individually. By changing the standard measuring spring, the actuator may also be used for split-range operation.

The Unique RV-ST regulating valve comes with an advanced electro-pneumatic controller with an integrated IP converter. This offers superior control of product flow by combining different pressure drops and stroke lengths. It also features a contact-free analog position sensor, which measures the position of the valve spindle, and a standard Profibus DP-V1 or optional DeviceNet communications interface. Analogue or binary feedback is available as options.

A regulating valve with maximum flexibility
It uses the same few moveable components, spare parts and maintenance tools and procedures as Alfa Laval Unique SSV valves. Using the upgrade kit available, it is possible to upgrade older regulating valves with the new control unit. The new control unit also supports rebuild of the actuator from NC (Normally Closed) to NO (Normally Open) and vice versa.
How it works
Construction: The Alfa Laval Unique RV-ST regulating valve with integrated IP converter is a third-generation single-seat valve. It features a broad selection of stainless steel tapered valve stems, an Alfa Laval Unique actuator with digital electropneumatic process controller for precise control of product flow and pressure, and rugged, long-lasting plastic stem bushings that eliminate metal-to-metal galling.
Valves from 1½” to 4” have the same standard plug seal as the entire Alfa Laval Unique valve series. The 1” needle valve does not have a plug seal. The stems are threaded to the actuator shaft, which eliminates the coupling between the stem and the actuator. Bushings at end of the actuator cylinder support the stem and ensure perfect alignment.
Operating Principle: The Alfa Laval Unique RV-ST regulating valve is controlled from a remote location by means of a digital electropneumatic process controller. The control unit comes in two versions: top control with display or basic control without display. It has an analogue 4–20 mA communication interface and is protected according to IP65 and IP67.
